In a play it is immediately obvious when an actor drops out of character and, when a dancer looses balance, a sigh passes through the audience: there is an immediate response. Dysfunctional processes are not always immediately noticeable, but can harm projects and company results for times on end. Organizations may rationally analyze processes and outcomes but they pay little or no attention to the irrational processes underlying people's behavior within the organization.
